New Pattern: Tangence

It's here!  This lace top has been in the making for many moons now, and today is the big one - out into the wild it goes!

Though winter is edging it's way into my life here in New Zealand at the moment, I'm thoroughly enjoying all your lovely sunny photos from Scotland.  Now seemed the right time for the summer top to come out to play.  Saying that - it was still warm enough here this week to model a lace top!

Tangence is part garter, part lace.  Worked from the back, over the shoulders and down the front this top is interesting and relatively quick to knit. Seamed with a three needle bind off and finished with applied i-cord, there are also a few very satisfying finishing touches which introduce ways to customise your own creation.

Yarn is merino/silk from The Wool Kitchen, which was wonderful to work with - it's shiny and drapey, and the Punch Drunk colour way is just... amazingly orange.

Head over to Ravelry for the pattern and more details, and hit The Wool Kitchen for your yarn!

Until the end of 27th May, you can use code 'Orange' on Ravelry for 50% off :)

Photo-time & Afternoon Tea

Perhaps it was an excuse for some gratuitous posing, but today we took our knits to the botanic gardens and got a little carried away!  Sunshine was out, and it was a great brisk winter day.  Y'know the good kind - nippy noses, pink cheeks and frozen toes, but no wet socks.  Lunch at the botanics tearoom was *yummy*, and I juuust managed to squeeze in a scone...  butter, jam and cream...

Unfortunately, none of the statues were available for photographing, so I manned up.

Some updated photos for Dandelion and Bru!  There are a few other wee pictures, but they shall need to remain hidden for the time being! :p  Want to be the first to find out what they'll be?  Sign up for the newsletter here :D

DIY: Sophisticated Mr. Fox!

He's here!!  What a handsome little Fox.

He loves nothing more than to casually observe your knitting, nonchalantly chill out in your garden, generally hang around looking cool.

You can make him on Ravelry here :)    You'll need:

Needles: 3.25mm (UK) DPNs or circulars using the magic circle technique.
Yarn:
Rowan Fine Tweed
Brown: 150m
Green: 45m
White & Brown: small amounts
Additional materials:
stuffing
buttons/toy eyes
buttons for nose (& tail for optional decoration)
Note: if you choose, you can knit Mr. Fox in any size of yarn, adjusting your needles as appropriate. Obviously he may end up rather taller or shorter than the fingering weight version depending on the size you use :)

He already has friends across the country!  This is Deborah's handspun fox (he's called Ron).

What have you got planned for this week?

Also, I'm going to Woolfest on the 29th!!  Rather excited!  I'm dragging my dear mum along.  She agreed to accompany me 'as long as I don't expect her to look enthusiastic'.  Ima trying to show her that knitting is cool...

Dandelion Hat!

Yey!  It's finally published!  After convincing my lovely man to take some wee photos of this amazing hat, and all the lovely test knitters finishing their brilliant versions, it is time :D

D'ye like it??

Pattern Information & Construction Notes:
This is a slouchy style hat, knit in the round using mosaic colourwork detail. Knit from ribbed brim, on smaller needles for snug fit, through patterned body on the larger needles up to the crown in two colours. You could also use the jogless stripe technique to ensure seamless transition between colours.
Instructions are provided for four sizes.
Finished Measurements:
Adult (Toddler, Child, Large Adult) finished size to fit 20”(16”,18”,22”) circumference heads. The standard length of this slouchy hat is approximately 10” (8”,10”,10”), though directions are included should you wish to vary this.
Yarn
Two complimentary shades of 4ply/sport yarn are required, approximately 200 yards of main colour and 100 yards of alternate colour will be required for the adult size. Allow 250/120 for larger size.
Hat shown is knit in Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply/sport, main colour (MC) oatmeal, alternate colour (AC) gold. This is a gorgeous silky smooth, shiny yarn. Though the hat would work equally well on another 4ply or sportweight yarn.
Needles
3.5mm (US 4) Double Pointed needles (or your preferred circular knitting method). You may wish to use 3.25mm or 3mm needles for the ridged brim to ensure snug fit.
Gauge
This is a lovey silky slouchy hat, so don’t worry too much about gauge. If you really really want exact gauge, the shown hat has 30 stitches and 40 rows in 4” in the wave stitch used for the body.

You can grab the pattern here on Ravelry, or here on Etsy :)

Excited for my Stall at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival!

I say excited, though I'm terrified in equal measure!  After gazing in awe at those oh-so-crafty peoples hard at work (& eating cake & laughing...) behind their stalls at craft fairs for quite a while now, I decided to take the plunge!  So this year I'll be sharing a stall at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival with the lovely Sarah of Porcini & Button.

The organisers seem lovely, and there's an amazing array of stallholders confirmed already! I'll be hard pushed not to wander away from my stall and spend all my monies on wooly goodness!

My plan is to make a plan.  Indeed, making a plan is always a good way to start.  A couple of baskets of goodies here and there, perhaps a special little item for the fair!

Will you be visiting the Edinburgh Yarn Festival this year?  Pop in and visit me!  I am always happy for a chat.  Perhaps I shall bring chocolate, though I'll likely have eaten it all by the time you get round to me :p

G'night lovelies!

Cuppa & Cake with Sylvia (Knitting Pattern Designer)

Hello Lovelies!

Nooooow, do I have a treat for you?!  Thats a rhetorical question, of course I do!

Whether it's the simple yet pretty designed shawl, the gorgeous brightly coloured photographs, or that half shaved pink hair that I so desperately wish my massive curly mane would mould itself into, Sylvia managed to carry out a photoshoot which makes me want to keep on clicking through.

I adore Autumn and Winter.  It gives the crispest sunlight, the freshest greens and that smell. That winter smell of cold things.  That smell of autumn when the leaves are almost melting on the ground as the snow soon will do too.  The smell of dusty ground on a warm autumn evening, the same ground which will carry the frost covered remains of leaves once winter arrives.

The Lonely Tree shawl by Sylvia Bo Bilvia @OwlPrintPanda.blogspot.co.uk

Sylvia recently published this 'Lonely Tree Shawl' pattern here on Ravelry, where it has become an extremely popular scarf pattern for beginners and experienced knitters alike.

She works at Baaad Anna's yarn store, and has recently begun a photography course, which we can hopefully follow on her pretty blog!

This week, I had a little chat with Sylvia about her knitting craze!

Hey!  So what are you knitting at the moment?

I am knitting so much stuff it isn't really even funny. I'm not usually a twenty project at a time gal, but that actually sounds about right. I think I have twenty projects on the go right now.

The most interesting of which are a stole pattern and another lace triangle shawl pattern, As well as a lace blanket, and a cowl-y, cape-y thing which doesn't really make a lot of sense yet, but it's on a pair of needles! I'm making a lot of stuff up right now, I'm in a bit of a knitting learning curve and so I'm knitting a bit like mad!

And what's your favourite cake to bake? Are you a tea or coffee gal?

I love food, and I love eating food, but I have to say I'm not especially good at preparing food. That being said, I have a gluten-free chocolate cake recipe which I adore. Once you remove the flour from the mix you get an easy, delicious cake to bake!

I love tea, I love british sweet tea with lots of milk and sugar in it. Love it, but I have to say that despite that, I am through and through a coffee girl. I've got my daily shpeal that I'll say to anyone whose listening about how I'm trying to cut down (at that point I'll take a sip of the coffee I'm holding) I can't really ever successfully cut down. I worry that if I stop drinking coffee I'll turn to something worse... but that's what I say about knitting too. Thank god it's just a coffee and knitting addiction and not an addiction to say, flashing people or something embarrassing like that.

Worst of it is that I just absolutely love iced, blended coffee, and that stuff isn't cheap!

I first came across your patterns when you published the Lonely Tree Shawl on Ravelry and it remains my favourite!  Which piece really captures your heart?

Hmm...  this is hard to say because they've all got interesting stories behind them, it's probably my All About Love shawl. That one was an intense pattern to write because I was just getting out of a three year relationship, and when I started designing it, he was helping me design it, and by the time I had finished it, we were split up and I was living at my mum's place. I was very depressed, having had my life shift so quickly (and unpleasantly), but a friend recommended I read this book by bell hooks (she doesn't capitalize her name) her book was called All About Love.

And it's about what it sounds like, it's all about love, and her radical re-imagining of it. For someone who was heartbroken, and who was losing faith in love, it was an important read to me. It's critical and cynical in all the right ways, but also it doesn't devalue love too. Written by a feminist! Love it.

That being said, the Lonely Tree shawl was an inspired pattern. I came up with it, designed it and knit it full of passion (and maybe some frustration). The idea for the photographs came to me before I had even started knitting it, and I knew what I wanted right away from it. And I think I was able to achieve it pretty perfectly! That's been happening more and more where I envision the photographs before I even start knitting it. I have one in the works that's going to be set in an old, somewhat decrepit house with very white pure lighting. I even have a few locations in mind! Hoping to get the same woman who did my Lonely Tree photos to model. That might be a way down the road though, that pattern has been giving me grief! I've already bought four different types of yarn (an aran, worsted, dk, and sock) trying to get the right gauge! So it goes I guess :)

What's your favourite knitting pattern?

Hmm, I love a lot of patterns. I'll say that the one that I have knit the most is probably the Summer Flies Shawl. I have knit a huge amount of those for friends and family. Like probably ten. I went through a phase where I could knit one in a couple of days. It's a lovely pattern for beginners because it has very little repeating lace in it, so you can just fudge it if you end up with the wrong number of stitches at the end, which the pattern conveniently puts on every row for you. Very well written.

Jared Flood is a huge inspiration for me, his photographs are always so beautiful. I have a mix of awe and motivation when I see them, a good combination. Major inspiration. Brooklyn Tweed's Wool People is like candy to me. When they come up with a new one I will drop whatever it is that I'm doing and browse for ages. Their newest one (Wool People 4) is stunning! I'd love to one day design for them. Lovely.

We spotted pictures of you at a craft fair recently, do you have any more lined up?

I don't actually!  I did the Culture Crawl this fall, but it was exhausting, and I was finding that selling knitting things wasn't really working. People in Vancouver are knitters now, if they aren't a knitter they know a knitter, so I was having a lot of people come up to me and say “I could knit that!” next year I'll be selling my patterns there instead!

I'm looking forward to more lovely shawls from Sylvia :)
Do you have any favourite patterns / designers?

Hope you're not all as freezing as I am here! (Edinburgh is very very very cold right now :/)

Amanda :) x

DIY: The Ominous Lighthouse Hat Knitting Pattern

Cheesy hat-story (*history*, gettit? muahahaha):

Whilst visiting my partners relatives on Mull, we decided to walk one of the many trails on the island.  The entire week was stormy, the walk was one of the wettest I have ever embarked upon - the weather threw hailstones, sheets of rain and gale force winds at us.  Suddenly, looming in the distance, we spotted the Ominous Lighthouse.  I decided I loved this lighthouse and upon arriving back at home in front of the warm fire, delved into the yarn stash I had packed in my suitcase (don't we all take unnecessary yarn on holiday with us?) and chose the warmest most rustic yarn I could find. Serendipity dictated that I had indeed brought the wooliest most sheep-like yarn I own, and the lighthouse seemed destined to influence this hat.

So when you're choosing your yarn, and knitting your yummy scrunchy warm hat, think on the wind and the hail, and of the looming lighthouse by the cold winter sea.

I shall put up a little post soon with more photos from my little Mull trip, it really was very pretty :)

This is a striped, slouchy style hat with a ribbed brim, striped body and pompom finish.

Worked upwards completely in the round, the hat is ribbed for the brim, then uses simple knit stitches for the main body; using two colours & an (optional) jogless stripe technique.

Instructions are provided for two hat sizes.  The length of the hat can also be altered by adding repeat rows within the pattern (as explained in pattern instructions).

Finished Measurements:
Small(Large) finished size to fit 20”(22”) circumference heads.

Yarn:
Two complimentary colours of aran weight yarn, 120 – 180m; or approximately 60-80m(70-90m) of each colour will be required, allowing yourself an amount at the higher end of the range if you wish to elongate the hat or add larger pompoms.

Model hat is knit using Rowan Purelife British Sheep Breeds Fine Boucle, in ‘Dark Brown Masham’ and ‘Masham Stripe’.

Needles:
5mm (US size 8) Double Pointed or Circular needles.  You may wish to use smaller needles for the ribbed brim (e.g. 4.5mm or US size 7) to make it tighter.

Gauge:
Because this is a wooly slouchy hat, don’t be too worried about your gauge.  The model hat is knitted to a gauge of 17 stitches by 22 rows in four inches on 5mm needles.

You can view the pattern on Ravelry for free here

I hope you might like making it!  Let me know if you do!

What lovely plans do you have for this coming week?

Amanda :) x
